Non previous requirements.

Objetivos

This training activity pursues three educational objectives, which will be addressed through a practical and interactive workshop:

  • To explain and introduce the process of defining research questions, research objectives, and hypotheses in the development of a doctoral thesis.
  • To train doctoral students in the design, analysis, and presentation of the theoretical framework of a doctoral thesis through approaches such as literature reviews, systematic literature reviews, and bibliometric analysis.
  • To develop students´ ability to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) critically, ethically, and effectively during the early stages of the research process.

Contenidos
  • Defining the Research Problem: Research Questions, Research Objectives, and Hypothesis Development.
  • Theoretical Framework: Epistemology, Research Paradigms, and Theoretical Framework Development.
  • Literature Review: Foundations of the Literature Review, Bibliometric Analysis, and Systematic Literature Review.

Profesorado

Cristina Figueroa Domecq. cristina.figueroa@urjc.es, Dpto. Economía de la Empresa. She holds a PhD in Economics and a Bachelor´s degree in Economics from the Autonomous University of Madrid, and was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Surrey (UK) (2018–2020). She has led and participated in several national and international research projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Horizon 2020), NATO´s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, and the Spanish Institute for Women. She currently serves as the national coordinator of the ERC-funded project "Tourism (In)justice: Rendering a Spatial Justice Framework for Tourism (JUST-TOUR)" (2023–2028).

Metodología

The workshop will adopt a lecture-based and practice-oriented teaching methodology, combining expository sessions with interactive activities designed to facilitate the application of the concepts presented. The theoretical components will provide participants with a structured understanding of the processes involved in defining research questions, objectives, hypotheses, and theoretical frameworks, as well as the principles underpinning literature reviews, systematic reviews, and bibliometric analysis within tourism research.

Throughout the workshop, theoretical explanations will be complemented by practical exercises in which participants will critically analyse published research, identify research gaps, formulate research questions and objectives, and develop preliminary theoretical frameworks related to their own doctoral topics. These activities are intended to encourage discussion, critical thinking, and peer learning while enabling students to apply the concepts to their individual research projects.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the responsible integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools into the early stages of the research process. The workshop will also address the limitations, ethical considerations, and good practices associated with the use of generative AI in doctoral research, fostering students´ ability to employ these technologies critically, transparently, and responsibly.
